Why Real Estate?

I hear it all of the time.  "I just love looking at houses!"  While this is true for the most part, there is so much more to Real Estate than watching HGTV and showing beautiful, staged, and marketable homes.  And most buyers don't only look at three homes, go under contract, and get moved like in the 30 minute shows.

As I sit in my office on this blustery 6 degree morning, I'm reminded that I have skidded across town on ice to present offers, signed contracts on trash can lids out in front of the hospital, sat with clients who were in labor during closings,  shown houses in the dead of winter when there is no heat in homes, and I've shown homes in the peek of the summer where your strength is just zapped by the heavy heat.  Glamorous? Not always.  Oh!  There is the occasional time when a house isn't clean at closing or junk is left in the house.  Guess who gets to haul it away?

I'm going somewhere with this... work with me for a gracious moment. Real Estate, aside from being a mother and wife, is the greatest joy of my life... and the hardest thing I've ever done (aside from childbirth, but we won't go there...)  Real Estate has forced me beyond by comfort zone.  I have been cursed at, shoulder cried on, had clients pass away, seen divorces, been threatened, been lied to, been questioned about my ability, and (last but not least) had a 92 year old gentleman fall asleep while I was visiting with him about selling his house.  Shall I continue?

BUT, I also held a sweet baby the other day who was born to clients of mine.  Today I am wearing a beautiful cashmere scarf given me by a dear client.  I am able, on many days to pick my children up from school in the middle of my hectic days, and I can be there for my family when needed.  I was one of the first to be called when a client found out they were expecting their first child.  I am overwhelmed each and every time I hand keys to a buyer for their new house.  It never gets old!  Once I had a couple needing a larger house so they could foster children.  We received an offer on their house the day they found out they would be receiving two foster children.  You talk about motivation to find them the right house!  Now I can stay connected though social media.  How fun to see the children (and parents) enjoying their new home!

Real Estate is more than opening houses for clients.  It means listening to clients' needs, knowing their goals, and offering's resources they will need when they move.  It means taking a client to lunch when they are new to the area and following up to see if they need anything after the sale is complete.  It means remembering their children's  names and little details about their lives.  It's about investing in client's business because they have trusted you with their largest investment.  Real Estate is not about sales to me.  That would be too easy.  Real Estate is about relationships.  It's about trust.  It's more paperwork than I ever expected!  (I hate paperwork, ask Christa our Rock Star Office Manager!)

When I first started my Real Estate career I thought I would "dabble".  Dabble and Real Estate do not go hand in hand.  You You don't pick a part time Realtor to handle your largest investment!  Duh!  Real Estate is hard work, long hours, takes a tough skin, determination, training and more training, reading, educating, communicating, systems for organisation, negotiating, time management, goal setting, self control, being truthful, staying true to yourself and pure grit!
